VOICE PROFESSORS

LUISA CASTELLANI
professor for the programs:
Annual Course, Artistic Master, Post-Graduate Master

Esteemed by Luciano Berio as being able, with different vocal characteristics, to inherit from Cathy Berberian, pointed among the first 7 singers of the world and having received press reviews in 18 different languages, Luisa Castellani is an interpreter and a teacher well known for the extreme flexibility of her vocal technique, her interest in a deeper experience of music, for her distinctive skill as a performer, particularly in the contemporary repertory and, in didactics, for her care in development of the uniqueness of the vocal characteristics of each one of her students.
She studied at the University of Turin and graduated with a degree in voice in 1982. She learned the traditional repertory with Gina Cigna, the contemporary one with Dorothy Dorow and broadened her Lieder repertory with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Anton Dermota. She also studied the baroque repertory with Paul Esswood. In 1991, she was awarded the Gino Tani opera prize. As a concert artist she has been invited by the most important international festivals, in the main theaters and concert halls of the world. She has interpreted rôles, even written for her, as an opera singer, and recorded many premières, often imagined for her voice, dedicated to her and has had the opportunity to work on music with the composers themselves. Her collaboration with Luciano Berio is particularly significant. He wrote for her the role of Ada in his Opera Outis, performed at La Scala in 1996 and the new version of Calmo and chose her to interpret Sequenza III and Folk Songs.
Luisa Castellani has sung as a soloist with the main orchestras of the radio and televisions of the world, she has collaborated with outstanding soloists and music ensembles and with world-wide renowned conductors.
Being persuaded to go beyond the traditional concert, she proposed and interpreted new and unusual solo vocal performances as well as stimulating modern collaborations. Invited by Giorgio Bernasconi to the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in 2001, aware of the necessity of research, she devotes herself with passion to teaching and gives courses also in Geneva, Lausanne and Neuchâtel.
As a lecturer and teacher, Luisa Castellani has been invited to hold master classes and conferences world-wide. She was in charge of the Class of Contemporary Vocal Performance of the CEE in Emilia Romagna and participated in the activities of the AEC (European Association of the Conservatives), in order to define international standards in teaching (Convention of Bologna). In 2010 with the approval of AEC’s list of experts by the German Quality Assurance Agency ZEvA, she was a member, for the singing courses, of the University of Karlsruhe AEC International Accreditation Committee. She has often been invited as a guest-expert to the examinations in the conservatories and, as a member of Jury, in international competitions.
Among the students who have studied with Luisa Castellani, many are now teachers, opera or concert singers. In particular, Barbara Zanichelli is now her assistant-professor at the CSI. Luisa Castellani has recorded more than 40 LPs and CDs for the main record houses such as Teldec and Deutsche Grammophon. Among others, she has recorded the “integrale” of Mozart Lieder, the monographic CD dedicated to the cantatas by Telemann, Pierrot Lunaire by Schoenberg with Sinopoli, Sequenza III by Berio and Gorecki’s Symphony n.3.
