CARLO COLOMBARA

​Carlo Colombara is considered one of the most important Italian verdian bass in the world.  
Also his forays into bel canto and romantic as part of French culture, have been received with unanimous applause from audiences and critics alike. His powerful voice timbre, wide, deep and agile with great communication skills and convincing actor skills, ensure a place of honour in the contemporary operatic world.

After twenty years of career, during which he worked with the most important conductors and directors of the international scene, Carlo Colombara continues to widen his repertoire pushed by his restless artistic spirit and a great vocation for singing and the theatre. 

In recent years debuted successfully the roles of Mefistofele (Boito), Escamillo (Bizet's Carmen), Don Pasquale (low's first foray into Italian opera buffa), four bass roles in Les contes d'Hoffmann and Don Giovanni (Mozart). In 2012, she debuted the role of Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca in Prague and Parma (in concert form), and was the star of the theatrical show Tonight I decide!, a new way to present the work to the public, with a look behind the scenes and the deepening of the relationship Director-singer.

The year 2013, the year Verdi, Colombara has interpreted the Messa da Requiem with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston, at the Southbank Centre for the Royal Festival Hall in London and at the Savonlinna Opera Festival. It was also Zechariah to Stuttgart State Opera at the Arena di Verona and Fiesco of Simon Boccanegra in Vienna and Salerno. Only non-Verdi raids were The Favorite at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées, the Petite Messe Solennelle in Paris and Vienna and Mefistofele at the Teatro Regio di Parma. 

In the years 2014 over-awaited debut in the new work of Kolonovits "El Juez" with José Carreras at the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao, participated with great success in a historic edition of Simon Boccanegra in Piacenza and Modena, and celebrations of the great Bulgarian bass Boris Christoff at the Theatre of Sofia in 3 productions (Aida, Nabucco, Don Carlo) then in Birmingham and London (Verdi's Requiem with the direction of Antonio Pappano) Salzburg where he sing in La Favorite  with Elina Garanca, Juan Diego Florez and Ludovic Tezier, Genova for Luisa Miller  and Attila in Catania.
This year 2015 he sing with big success Aida, La Bohéme and the Verdi’s Messa da Requiem in Teatro alla Scala di Milano with Zubin Mehta, Aida in Arena di Verona, Maria Stuarda in Paris, Requiem in Gasteig by Munich and Prauge and in the big Concerto in memory of Elena Obraztsova in theater Bolshoi in Moskow. 

In the season 2016, he sing in La Scala Milan in Rigoletto,  Norma in Teatro San Carlo of Naples with Mariella Devia and Nello Santi, Aida in Moscow with Zubin Menta, the debut in the role of Boris Godunov in Varna (Bulgaria) and Macbeth in Bruxellex, Faust in Zagreb. 
The new season 2017 start with the new success with “Attila” in Modena and Simon Boccanegra in Montecarlo, Anna Bolena and La Boheme at La Scala, Milano,  Anna Bolena in Avignon and many orhers performances in all the most important theaters of the world.


In his discography include numerous recordings on CD and DVD for Virgin, Deutsche Grammophon, BMG, EMI, RCA, Foné, Dynamic, Decca, Bongiovanni, Nuova Era, Naxos, etc. In addition he participated in several radio broadcasts (Radio France, Bayerischer Rundfunk among others) and television performances from La Scala in Milan, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. In 2008 he presented to Sevilla the DVD El arte del bajo, Carlo Colombara en Sevilla, published by Naxos in 2012, in which interprets some of the roles that made him famous. In the year 2015 the CD “Recital Great Opera Scenes” for Universal DECCA.

During his career, Carlo Colombara has been awarded the Lauri Volpi (1994), Orazio Tosi (1995), Cappelli (1999), the Skein of gold (2002), Monteverdi (2009) Award and Golden Award Bonci (2011) and Domenico Danzuso (2014) International Opera Award – Oscar della Lirica (2017)

Extra Notes:

Carlo Colombara felt in love with the opera at the age of nine, having witnessed a Carmen at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, his native city. He began his musical training at age of 12, studying piano, while the study of singing, his great passion, starts at 15, always in Bologna with Paride Venturi. In 1986 he won the prize for the best Italian singer of the  G. B. Viotti competition, in the year after he was awarded of the first prize in the As.Li.Co competition, just before his debut in Teatro dell'Opera di Roma with Silva in Ernani (Giuseppe Verdi). The follow up was Seneca of L'Incoronazione di Poppea (Monteverdi) in the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Tiresias in Oedipus Rex (Stravinsky) in the Teatro La Fenice in Venice.

Then Tokyo, London, Berlin and the Vienna State Opera were waiting for him, it was a climb that, in the Decade of the 1990s leads him to establish himself as one of the most important singers of his generation, thanks to the success of his debut at La Scala in Milan (1989) in the role of Procida in I vespri siciliani, conducted by Riccardo Muti. He went back several times to Milan in several different opera's as the Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Requiem, Lucia di Lammermoor, Nabucco and in the season opening with Macbeth, again conducted by Riccardo Muti.

In addition to the operatic side, Carlo Colombara undertook on an intense activity as concert performer, performing more than 100 times the Verdi's Messa da Requiem in cities such as Florence, Rome, London, Naples, Paris and Modena – the latter in memory of Luciano Pavarotti, with whom he appeared in the latest Requiem performed by the famous tenor from Modena.

With Zubin Mehta he participated to the spectacular production of Turandot in the forbidden city of Beijing, a show broadcast throughout the world and available on CD and DVD.

Carlo Colombara is considered to be an exemplar for bass repertoire. His career is extensive and he has debuted in some of the most important theatre companies and has collaborated assiduously with Riccardo Muti, Bruno Bartoletti, Gary Bertini, Riccardo Chailly, Myung-Whun Chung, Colin Davis, Daniel Oren, Georges Prêtre, Gianadrea Gavazzeni, Carlo Maria Giulini, Eliahu Inbal, Vladimir Jurowski, Lorin Maazel, Pinchas Steinberg, Zubin Mehta, Antonio Pappano, Michel Plasson, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Georges Prêtre and Georg Solti.
